Sustainability

Sustainability is a critical issue, and we take our responsibilities seriously.

Many of our clients share the same concerns and are similarly committed to actions which help to limit the damage to our environment.

Technology, workplaces and work-related travel all negatively impact the environment. In our everyday working practices, our own technology infrastructure and our client work, we are committed to approaches which limit our carbon footprint and support our collective future.

However, we also acknowledge that we are not perfect and are always actively looking to improve our practices. Occasionally commercial priorities can also influence decisions which might have an eco-friendlier alternative.

Where we can, we actively pursue the following policies and actions:

1. Greener hosting: We only work with website hosts that are committed to greener data centres. Both Microsoft and AWS are committed to ensuring that their data centres are powered by renewables by 2025.

2. Optimised environment: Where possible we set up and optimise environments to reduce their data emissions, both within 3chillies and for our clients. We use methods such as rightsizing through automation and caching using CDNs to minimise environmental impact.

3. Optimised website and content: Where possible we consider the environment in website and content design, for example reducing the number of pages and assets, and avoiding practices such as the auto-playing of videos. We also encourage our clients to do the same.

4. Reporting and transparency: We keep an eye on the carbon footprint of our website using the Website Carbon calculator and verification from the Green Web Foundation.

5. Reducing work travel: We are committed to keeping work-related travel to a minimum. Meetings are predominantly carried out online and our employees can mainly work from home or remotely if they wish to.

6. Sustainable office space: Our choice of office space was influenced by sustainable credentials, and The Blade in Reading is one of the most eco-friendly buildings in the area. The Blade has a top-twenty BREEAM rating in the UK and is the highest placed in Berkshire. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) assesses building performance based on a range of environmental credentials and is used across 70 countries.

7. Partners and clients: We strive to work with technology providers, partners and clients who share a commitment to sustainability.

8. Anti-greenwashing: We’re committed to giving an accurate and honest description of our record on sustainability. We are anti-greenwashing.
